Fairytales From Around The World: The Adventures of Prince Achmed

  • Rio Cinema 107 Kingsland High Street London, England, E8 2PB United Kingdom (map)

ABOUT THE FILM

A real piece of cinema history, THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED is the oldest surviving full-length animation in the world. Groundbreaking German artist Lotte Reiniger made it in 1926 using an ingenious silhouette technique (similar to shadow puppets). The story, taken from the Arabian Nights, follows young Prince Achmed – tricked by an evil sorcerer, he must travel through distant magical lands on a quest to rescue his beloved princess. Not only did this stunning film lay the groundwork for scores of great animation movies that followed, it’s full of all the thrilling adventure, magic and romance you’d expect of a classic fairytale.

Content Information: Released in 1926, this film features some outdated stereotypes of the era through the use of character design.

While this screening is curated for family audiences, it is open to all. Please note all children must be accompanied by a parent or carer. Our age recommendation for this film is 6+
